Abstract
Land reform in Taiwan was necessary because farmers had to be given the opportunity to adopt innovations and new cultural practices. Improved standards of living soon followed, and this in turn stimulated community development on the island. As a result the formal ties in villages with regard to leadership and the power structure were radically transformed. Agricultural extension and the spread of rural education brought in a generation of new younger farmers who were capable of reaping the benefits of the new farm technology and management techniques. Research was given an important place in government. Morever, Taiwan farmers have been quick to adjust to new markets and ideas. K. P. B.
